In Asia and the Middle East, military fleets of fighter planes are modernising at a rapid pace in a context of heightening regional tensions: India-Pakistan rivality exacerbated in May 2025, growing military presence in the South China Sea and defence of Taiwan, restructuring of forces around Iran’s position, etc.
In this context, the 25th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin staged an alliance of convenience around China, aiming at reducing the membres’ reliance on Europe and the United States. An actual consensus on regional strategy was not probable, given regional tensions (including India-Pakistan and India-China border conflicts, and tensions between China, Malaysia and Indonesia in the South China Sea).
